Utah Senate defeats anti-graffiti paraphernalia bill

SALT LAKE CITY -- A bill aimed at making it illegal to possess any instrument, tool or device with the intent of vandalizing an area with graffiti has failed in the Senate.

Utah senators had previously given tentative approval to the measure sponsored by state Sen. Karen Mayne, D-West Valley City.

Authorities say hackers affiliated with the group "Anonymous" attacked the Salt Lake City Police Department's website on Tuesday because of their opposition to the anti-graffiti paraphernalia bill.

The website remained down on Thursday as authorities continued their investigation.

Police say the hackers gained access to sensitive information, including citizen complaints about drug crimes, including phone numbers, addresses and other personal information.

Salt Lake City Det. Dennis McGowan says criminal charges in the hacking case are being considered.

The Senate defeated the bill Thursday.
