Fire does major damage to Salt Lake sawdust plant

SALT LAKE CITY -- Investigators say an overnight fire that caused major damage to a Salt Lake City sawdust plant appears suspicious.

Scott Freitag of the Salt Lake City Fire Department said flames were spotted just before 1 a.m. Friday at the one-acre Pioneer Sawdust complex. Officials say buildings, vehicles and equipment are damaged.

More than 50 firefighters were called to the scene.

No employees are thought to have been at the plant when the fire sparked.

The family-owned business opened in 1956 and produces wood products, including sawdust for cleaning up spills.
