Jazz miss chance to celebrate red, white and blue predecessor

The NBA is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the American Basketball Association's founding with a series of games during NBA Hardwood Classics Month.

The ABA existed for 10 seasons (1967-1976), when four of its teams -- Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, New York Nets and San Antonio Spurs -- joined the NBA.

As part of the celebration, nine teams will recognize the anniversary by wearing commemorative uniforms and hosting in-arena events.

But no Utah Jazz/Utah Stars connection. Which is a shame. NBA Hardwood Classics will run through February and will feature 38 games.

Olympic memories

The Standard-Examiner has requested reader input as we prepare to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the 2002 Winter Olympics here in Utah.

The response has been generous and the memories enjoyable. We'll share as many as we can in a special Olympic section on Feb. 12, but all the full essays will appear at www.standard.net.

More memories

The special Olympic section will detail events planned in the Top of Utah to reminisce about the Winter Games. A few events will be held before then.

The Utah Winter Games figure skating competition is set for today at the County Ice Center in Murray. Next Saturday, the Park City Ice Arena will host a free skate and meet an greet with Olympic athletes at 1 p.m.
