Nagle pledges calm approach to issues

SYRACUSE -- Mayor Jamie Nagle invoked the names of former President Ronald Reagan and former House Speaker Thomas "Tip" O'Neill in an effort to improve the dialogue among elected officials in her community.

Nagle took a few moments at the end of a special meeting Thursday to share a story involving the two former politicians who were at opposite ends of the political spectrum but never let their differences get in the way of the affection they felt for each other.

She suggested current council members could disagree on issues without ripping each other apart in public forums. Her comments came on the heels of a fractious week in which the appointment of a new fire chief appeared to show a growing divide between Nagle and some members of the council.

The mayor said she has resolved to be better for the residents.

"I have not always been the voice of calm," she said in reference to her role in the dispute.
