Thumbs up: To volunteers who are "human books" at Utah State University's Merrill-Cazier Library. We think it's cool that individual with expertise on distinct subjects can be "checked out" by patrons and provide information to library users.
Thumbs down: To a would-be Ogden area tagger who explained to police who caught him in the act that he was hoping his graffiti would help him get a job as a graphic artist. Try a resume, sir, and hope there isn't a background check.
Thumbs up: To Mount Ogden High School, which has begun a series of very inexpensive community classes on Tuesday nights. The four-session classes have topics that include creative writing, beginning quilting and Computer 101, and others. More sessions are scheduled. Call Daniel at (801) 436-7182 to recievemore information.
Thumbs down: To the social media site Twitter, which may censor messages on a country to country basis. That's appalling, and completely against the whole idea of freedom that defines the advances in social media. Please say it isn't so, Twitter!
Thumbs up: To legislation that would make it easier for cities to comply with requirements to get initiatives on ballots. Residents in Kaysville and North Ogden have had a tough time complying with ballot initiative rules that get rather nitpicking. Senate Bill 17, sponsored by state Sen. Scott Jenkins, R-Plain City, is designed to make the process less cumbersome.
Thumbs down: To red-meat rhetoric Utah pols, most notably Gov. Gary Herbert, use against the federal government. Herbert railed against an "overreaching, out-of-control and out-of-touch" federal government ... unless we need that federal cash to recover from natural disasters or to keep Hill Air Force Base thriving in the future, right, Guv?
