KAYSVILLE -- The city is offering residents the chance to buy a device that will allow them to safely connect a generator to their home.
These manual generator transfer switches attach to home power meters and can be installed for $500, which the city will finance interest-free for one year. Installation is free.
After the Dec. 1 windstorm caused mass power outages, several residents were interested in using generators as backup power for their homes, Councilman Ron Stephens said.
Kaysville City Power already had a solution in the works by the time Stephens approached the utility with his concerns.
Improper installation of generators can cause deadly ventilation problems in a home or bring serious injury to a power company line worker, Stephens said.
The offer is for a GenerLink unit, which comes with a 20-foot locking plug set. The city will order and install as many units as needed.
As of Jan. 24, the city had already received orders for 35 units, said building official Mike Blackham.
"It was a neat experience to be able to see the cooperation between the city and the power company to make it possible for someone to make that hookup, so it is safe and convenient and at a reasonable cost," Stephens said.
More information is available on the units at www.generlink.com.
