Mark Allen Nielsen of Roy celebrated his 80th birthday with a family gathering this past week.
He was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Hyrum to Albert and Esther Allen Nielsen. He graduated from South Cache High School, attended Utah State University for a year, and worked for a year in Texas for Gulf Research Co. He later served two years in the Army during the Korean conflict.He married Rea Winward on Sept. 25, 1953, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Logan Temple. During the last year with the Army, they lived in Olympia, Wash. They later moved to Logan, where he enrolled again at USU in the engineering program. While attending college, he drove the city bus for Vern Cook Co. and spent a summer driving a tour bus in Teton National Park.
In 1959, he moved with his family to Roy. He began his career with the Marquardt Co., went on to the Boeing Co., and then worked 27 years as a civilian with the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a general engineer and manager of the value engineering program at Hill Air Force Base. Since retiring, he has worked full time with his wife in her fabric and sewing store.
He served in many LDS callings: stake missionary, Scoutmaster, bishop, high counselor and several other leadership and teaching positions.
His children and spouses are Allen and Sherry Nielsen, Jay and Camille Nielsen, Jerilyn and Steven Woody, Keith and Janet Nielsen, Richard Nielsen, and Melinda and Kenneth Hutchenrider. He has 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
