Negotiator attempts to end southern Utah standoff

ST. GEORGE -- A negotiator and a SWAT team are on the scene of a standoff in southern Utah that has closed a stretch of Interstate 15 in Washington County.

Utah Highway Patrol officials say a chase began about 11 a.m. Monday after La Verkin police attempted to make a traffic stop near the Toquerville cemetery.

The chase continued through Hurricane, on northbound I-15 and then onto southbound I-15.

Authorities used a spike strip to deflate all the tires on the car, which came to a stop about noon at mile marker 17. A standoff was still in progress by midafternoon.

The Spectrum of St. George reports (http://bit.ly/Ab0bhe) the suspect is an adult man with a teen and a child passenger.
