Top-of-Utah swimmers aim high at state meets

The state 5-A swimming championships likely won't produce a team champion from Region 1, but several top performers from Weber, Davis, Layton and Fremont hope to climb the podium this weekend at BYU's pool.

Weber's Drake Mendelson, Chandler Ward and Shea Smith on the the boys side, and Erin Nordhill, Elizabeth Tomon and Rachel DeYoung on the girls side, hope to cap their seasons in style.

Davis boys Zach Santella, Ben Halls, Sam Byron and Parker Simonsen, as well as Fremont's Grey Mayer will also be angling for top finishes.

Layton's Madison Ramos and Anna Salazar, as well as Davis' Amanda Bellison will figure in their specialties on the girls side.

Action begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, and at noon on Saturday.

The state diving competition is set for Thursday at BYU. The girls compete at 9 a.m., with the boys division starting at noon.

Swimming add

Last weekend's 3-A meet produced runaway team wins for the Judge Memorial girls and the Park City boys, a few Region 11 swimmers posted good times in their specialties.

Ogden's Jodi Pham swam to a sixth-place finish in the 50 freestyle, helping the Tigers finish 15th, a spot ahead of Bear River.

On the boys side, Ogden's Brady Wahlstrom swam seventh in the 500 freestyle eighth in the 200 freestyle and helped his team finish eighth in the 400 freestyle relay. The Tigers finished 12th as a team.

Ben Lomond's Isaac Gonzalez finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke, while Bear River's Jacob Kerby was ninth in the 100 backstroke.

In the 4-A meet, Box Elder's 200 medley relay team finished eighth. The Bees finished 11th as a team.

Blaze honors announced
