Execution date set for convicted Utah killer

SALT LAKE CITY -- A judge has set an April 5 execution date for a Utah State Prison inmate on death row since 1989.

Fourth District Court Judge Donald Eyre signed the warrant for Anthony Michael Archuleta's execution during a hearing in Spanish Fork Wednesday.

Archuleta and co-defendant Lance Wood were convicted in separate trials in 1989 of the murder of Southern Utah University student Gordon Church. Archuleta was sentenced to die and Wood to life in prison without parole.

The Utah Supreme Court has rejected five appeals from Archuleta.

Assistant Utah Attorney General Tom Brunker says it's not likely he will be executed in April because the case has not been appealed in federal court.

A message left for Archuleta's attorney, James Slavens, was not immediately returned.
