Utah 10th in nation for students passing AP exams

SALT LAKE CITY -- The company that offers Advanced Placement exams says Utah's passing rate on the tests is tenth in the nation.

The College Board says that more than one in five Utah students in the Class of 2011 passed an AP exam. The only other western states in the top 10 are California and Colorado.

College Board officials say more than 18,500 Utah students took nearly 30,000 AP tests last year and had a 68 percent pass rate. That's a 7.5 percent increase in participation over the prior year, and a 1 percent increase in the passing rate.

Davis and Nebo school districts are being honored for three straight years of improvement.

AP classes are accelerated, college preparatory courses. Students who pass the exam can earn college credit for their work.
