Utes battle back, but drop fifth straight contest

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Carrick Felix scored 15 points, including a dunk with 47 seconds to play and a pair of critical free throws with 11.7 seconds remaining, and Arizona State held off Utah 57-52 on Thursday night, sending the Utes to their fifth straight loss and 11th in 12 games.

Their lone victory in that span was a 64-43 rout of Arizona State in Salt Lake City on Jan. 21. Trent Lockett had 12 points in his first game back after missing six games with a sprained right ankle. The Sun Devils had gone 1-5 in Lockett's absence.

Chris Hines was the only player in double figures for Utah (5-19, 2-10) with 10 points, but he made just 3 of 15 shots. Overall, the Utes shot 30 percent and had to heat up at the end to even reach that paltry figure.

Arizona State's Jordan Bachynski had 11 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double.

* SOUTHERN UTAH 60, WESTERN ILLINOIS 44: At Cedar City, Jackson Stevenett had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead Southern Utah to a victory against Western Illinois.

The win helped the Grizzlies keep pace with Weber State for a share of the Big Sky lead. Weber State beat Northern Arizona 67-49.

Cherry had eight steals and moved into 10th place on the conference's all-time list with 201 steals.

* SACRAMENTO STATE 86, MONTANA STATE 76: At Sacramento, Calif., Joe Eberhard scored 23 points and shot 5 of 5 on 3-pointers in lifting Sacramento State to a win over Montana State.

Montana State (11-12, 6-6), which trailed 38-29 at halftime, dug itself out of a 17-point deficit in the second half to get within 79-74 with 1:47 remaining, but the Hornets held Montana State to 1 of 4 shooting and forced a turnover for the remainder to win comfortably.

* PORTLAND STATE 67, IDAHO STATE 64: At Pocatello, Idaho, Charles Odum scored 18 points and Chehales Tapscott had 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead Portland State to a victory against Idaho State.
