WSU women continue downward spiral in road loss

CHENEY, Wash. -- The Eagles are on a roll, and the Wildcats didn't have an answer for it on Thursday night.

Senior forward Brianne Ryan knocked down 33 points, leading Eastern Washington to a 78-45 victory over the Weber State women's basketball team at Reese Court.

Ryan, who had 32 points in the first meeting between the teams in Ogden in January, is the Big Sky's leading scorer this season, averaging more than 19 points per game.

Weber State, which dropped to 0-11 in Big Sky play (2-22 overall), was led by junior forward Shawnte Taylor's 14 points, while senior guard Caela Mohre added eight.

Eastern Washington won its sixth straight game, improving to 10-2 in Big Sky action (16-9 overall).

The Eagles led 40-21 at halftime, shooting 51.6 percent from the field. Things went from bad to worse for the Wildcats in the second half as they connected on just 7-of-31 shots from the field (22.6 percent).

The 33-point loss was the worst for Weber State since falling 78-40 to Wyoming on Dec. 18, 2009, and was the worst Big Sky loss since 1998.

Weber State returns home on Saturday seeking its first Big Sky win of the season against Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks are 0-13 on the road this season, but defeated Weber State 71-58 in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Saturday's game is also Weber State's annual Breast Cancer Awareness day, with the first 100 fans receiving a free pink shirt.

* BYU 70, NO. 19 GONZAGA 40: At Provo, Kim Parker had 16 points and BYU scored 20 straight in the second half to rout No. 19 Gonzaga, handing the Bulldogs their worst conference loss in a decade.

Jennifer Hamson added 14 points and Kristen Riley had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Cougars (22-4, 10-2 West Coast). Haley Steed had eight points and 10 assists to move into fourth all-time on the school's career assist list.

Kayla Standish scored 12 points to lead Gonzaga (21-4, 10-2). The Bulldogs leading scorer missed her first 10 shots. The Lady Cougars are now tied with Gonzaga atop the West Coast standings.
