Busy week in wrestling, swimming

PROVO -- Davis' Sam Bryson led the Top of Utah charge on the first day of the state 5-A swimming championships at BYU.

Bryson swam second in the boys 50-yard freestyle race.

Viewmont's Lars Thorderson finished second in the 200 freestyle, while Weber's Drake Mendelson was third with Greg Mayer of Fremont fourth. In the 200 individual medley, Davis' Santella finished fifth.

The Bingham girls and Brighton boys lead the team standings going into today's finale.

Weber sits sixth overall, with Davis seventh. Viewmont's girls are ninth, with Weber 10th.

Region 1 wrestling

* STANDINGS TIGHT FOR TEAM TITLE: At Syracuse High, Fremont leads host Syracuse, Weber and Layton in a nip-and-tuck Region 1 wrestling tournament.

Following Friday's opening rounds, the Silver Wolves have 281 points, followed by the Titans (259), Warriors (258) and Lancers (244).

Action begins at 5 p.m. today, with the finals set for 7 p.m.
