Foundation for fallen Utah officers recognized

SALT LAKE CITY -- A nonprofit organization that has been set up to assist families of fallen officers was recognized by the Legislature in a concurrent resolution.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 1, sponsored by Sen. Kevin Van Tassell, R-Vernal, and Rep. Bradley Daw, R-Orem, was approved, 67-0 with eight absent, by the House on Thursday. The bill goes to the governor for further consideration.

The bill recognizes Tore and Mona Steen, of Park City, for setting up the Utah 1033 Foundation. The foundation receives private donations, and when an officer is killed in the line of duty, the foundation presents a $25,000 check to the officer's spouse.

Rep. Lee Perry, R-Perry, said the family of Ogden Police Officer Jared Francom received a check from the foundation shortly after he was shot and killed in January.
