Honors on the way for many Utah legends

Lots of Hall of Fame induction ceremonies straight ahead.

The University of Utah will induct two former Ute athletes and a pair of former coaches into the Crimson Club Hall of Fame on April 23 at Energy Solutions Arena.

Honored at the 2012 induction ceremony will be Norma Carr (softball and volleyball coach/administrator), Bente Dahlum (skiing), Ron McBride (football coach) and Keith Van Horn (basketball).

McBride just retired as Weber State's football coach.

Meanwhile, Weber State will honor its 1959 NJCA national championship basketball team on Feb. 17 at the Ogden Marriott. Coached by Bruce Larson, team members included Loren Burton, Joe Carter, Edward Chatlin, Richard Connolly, Gary Gardner, Lynn Hadfield, Allen Holmes, Gene Kunz, Gordon Millerberg, Val Weathers, and team manager Bart Mifflin. Today, former Utah Jazz coach/president Frank Layden will have his jersey retired at Niagra University. Layden (1955) played and coached for the Purple Eagles, then jumped to the NBA.

Finall, the Nothern Utah USBCA will induct Kris Dunkel, Fred Meaders, Karen Wallace, and Steve Deal along with Storm Products into its bowling Hall of Fame during a banquet on Feb. 18 at the Timbermine Restaurant. For ticket information, visit www.nuusbca.com.

Diamond notes

Damon Berryhill is slated to return for a fourth season as manager for the Ogden Raptors. While Bill Simas will be back as pitching coach, Doug Mientkiewicz is set to work as hitting coach.

Mientkiewicz played with the Salt Lake Buzz years ago before a 11-year MLB career.

Spreading cheer

Utah Blaze players, coaches and dancers, along with mascot Torch, visited the Salt Lake City Shriners Hospital for Children on Tuesday.

Wednesday, the Jazz mascot Bear and team officials participated in the opening of a new Jazz-themed interventional radiology suite at Primary Children's Medical Center.

Tidbits

Today's Weber State-Northern Arizona women's basketball game (5 p.m.) has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Day as part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Play4Kay initiative.
