SYRACUSE -- With a super start to Saturday's championship round, the Fremont Silver Wolves claimed the Region 1 wrestling championships in action at Syracuse High School.
Fremont tallied 252.5 points, followed by Weber with 237, Syracuse with 233 and Layton with 232. Davis was fifth at 165.5, with Northridge at 58.
Fremont picked up individual wins from Jaydon Rogers at 106, York Ash at 113, A.J. Arteaga at 126, and Jake VanValkenburg at 220.
Rogers decisioned teammate Dallin Denton in the opening title match, 8-4. At 113, Ash earned a 6-1 decision over Syracuse's Josh Boman, 6-1.
Syracuse's Jake Garver topped teammate Brantley McGuire, 3-0, in the 120-pound match. Syracuse's Zane Rich earned a tought 2-1 decision over Weber's Tanner Marriott at 132.
Arteaga defeated Syracuse's Kalin Gray, 10-3, at 126.
Layton's Ken Astle edged Weber's Mike Sjoblom, 4-3, in the 138-pound final. Layton's Davis Marriott topped Weber's Zach Huntsman, 7-3, in the 152-pound final.
Northridge's Ryan Goodwin topped Fremont's Brandon Barela by pin in the 145-pound final.
Weber's Mack Huntsman won at 160 with a 3-1 decision over Syracuse's Gregg Marchant. Weber's Devon Childress earned a 11-6 decision over Syracuse's James Stubbs at 170.
Davis' Nick Casey topped Weber's Luke Blanch by pin at 182. Davis' Justin Higley posted a 10-3 decision over Layton's Daviaire Dickerson at 195.
Vanvalkenburg pinned Weber's Jared Tracy at 220.
Layton's Carlos Turner pinned Fremont's Zach Waddoups to wrap things up at 285.
Fremont also got thirds from Tyson Roberts (132), Calvin Carter (182) and fourths from Ty Kenison (195) and Ryan Zaugg (285).
Weber got thirds from Ryan Perry (170) and Andrew Dubose (220), and fourths from Stanton Wister (113), Dakota Caldwell (120) and Sam Kolkow (145).
Syracuse got thirds from Teague Vigil (138), Wyatt German (145) and Dillon Spencer (152), and fourths from Brock George (106) and Austin Wilcox (126).
Layton got thirds from Andrew Astle (113), Cade Wilson (126) and Braydon Garcia (160), and fourths from Stetson Jones (152), Landon Brown (160), Carson Welty (170), Dylan Sackett (182) and Jesus Avina (220).
Davis got thirds from Taylor Porath (106), Derek Thomas (120), Connor Weaver (138) and Beau Swenson, and a fourth from Isaac Mckay (132).
Northridge also got a third from Kristofer Warden (195).
The top wrestlers now prepare for the state 5-A championships on Feb. 15-18 at Utah Valley University.
* STATE TITLES DECIDED IN SPEEDY POOL: At Provo, Brighton won both the boys and girls titles in the state 5-A swimming championships at BYU.
While the Bengals dominated with depth, Davis finished fifth in the boys team standings, with Weber ninth and Viewmont 11th.
On the boys side,Weber's Chandler Ward swam fifth in the 100 freestyle, with Davis' Sam Bryson sixth and Fremont's Greg Mayer seventh.
Weber's Drake Mendelson was second in the 100 backstroke, with Viewmont's Lars Thorderson sixth.
Davis' Zach Santella was sixth in the 100 butterfly. Later, Bryson, Santella and Darts teammates Ben Halls and Parker Simonsen finished second in the 200 freestyle relay. They same four swimmers were third in the 400 freestyle relay, with Weber sixth and Viewmont seventh.
Halls was ninth in the 100 breaststroke.
Viewmont's Josh Meyers was eighth in the 500 freestyle.
Weber's 200 medley relay team finished eighth.
On the girls side, Viewmont's Sienna Smith was eighth in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 500 freestyle. Davis' Amanda Belliston was ninth in the 100 backstroke.
The Vikings were seventh in the 200 freestyle relay.
