$500k Utah meth bust tied to drug cartels

SALT LAKE CITY -- Federal agents say they've seized about half a million dollars in methamphetamine from a Mexican drug cartel over the weekend in Salt Lake County.

Drug Enforcement Administration officials say they found methamphetamine in a tire when they made a Friday night traffic stop on Interstate 15 near Murray. The stop led them to a gated community in Emigration Canyon, where more contraband was found.

Agents say they discovered high-powered weapons, handguns, marijuana, 25 pounds of methamphetamine and $100,000 in cash.

DEA Assistant Special Agent Frank Smith describes the busts as part of an international case with ties to the East Coast and West Coast.

Smith says the raid is a significant blow to Mexican cartels in Utah.

The DEA has not released specific information about arrests in the case.
