A week after battling for region crowns, the elite wrestlers in the state hunker down to battle for the 2012 state championships at Utah Valley University.

The top 4-A and 5-A wrestlers start things off, wrestling over two grueling days of action on Wednesday and Thursday at UVU's UCCU Center.

Action starts at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and at noon on Thursday. The finals are set for 6:10 p.m.

The 1-A, 2-A and 3-A teams will do the same on Friday and Saturday on those same UCCU Center mats.

Region 1 champion Fremont will lead the charge into the state 5-A foray, but wrestlers from all six schools figure to be in the mix at every weight class. In fact, it's a good bet a few state title matches will include the same two wrestlers who met last Saturday at Syracuse High for the region crown.

While Fremont won the Region 1 title, Weber, Syracuse and Layton appear to have the horses to top the leaderboard, along with Region 2 champion Viewmont and Region 4 power Pleasant Grove.

In the 4-A ranks, Box Elder and Mountain Crest battle for the Region 5 title every season, then turn around and battle for the state crown.

This year, upstart Maple Mountain figures to give the Bees -- who won the Region 5 title in convincing fashion in Smithfield last week -- a run for the 4-A title, along with Region 6 champion Clearfield.

The Falcons -- led by wrestlers Dakota Wickel, Zeth Porter, Christian Kodele, and Colton Thiel -- earned a spot among the 4-A elite with the region crown.

In the 3-A tournament, Bear River won the Region 11 title, and sent most of its wrestlers through Saturday's 3-A North Division Tournament at Ben Lomond High on to the state bracket.

Morgan, Ben Lomond and Ogden also sent their top wrestlers through to the state finals.
