Man plays porn by accident instead of Smurfs at child's birthday party

TREMONTON — He probably should have stuck to Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

A Tremonton man hosting his child’s birthday party over the weekend briefly played a pornographic video for kids in attendance, Police Chief Dave Nance said Monday.

The man, whose name was not released, had rented “The Smurfs” DVD from a Redbox kiosk to show at the party, Nance said.

However, after loading the movie into his laptop and switching on the device, pornographic images briefly flashed up on a projection screen in view of the young partygoers, Nance said.

The man notified police Monday to report someone had tampered with “The Smurfs” DVD.

Police inspected the DVD but didn’t find any problem with the disc and assumed the porn was probably on the laptop.

Information regarding how many children were at the party was not available.

Police do not intend to investigate further or seek criminal charges because the incident was apparently an accident, Nance said, adding that the man is embarrassed.

“He’s got some explaining to do (to children at the party and their parents),” he said.

There has been at least one other incident in Northern Utah where porn has popped up on a youth-oriented DVD.

In December 2006, a 14-year-old Layton boy discovered hard-core pornography on a video game he received as a Christmas gift.
