Bees, Wolves looking up at state wrestling tourneys

OREM -- The Top of Utah's best wrestling teams had better put on their rally caps.

Following two rounds of action at the state 4-A and 5-A wrestling tournaments at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center, Region 5 powers Box Elder, Mountain Crest and Logan find themselves looking up at Maple Mountain in the team standings.

In the 5-A team chase, being held at the same time on two mats at UCCU, Pleasant Grove holds a lead over Region 2 champion Viewmont, while Region 1 champion Fremont sits fourth in the standings.

Box Elder trails Maple Mountain by 24 points through the quarterfinals, and the Bees have 11 wrestlers alive through two rounds of action. But Maple Mountain also qualified wrestlers at most of the weight classes.

Mountain Crest sits third, with Logan fourth. Region 6 champion Clearfield is sixth with three wrestlers still alive for state titles in Colton Thiel at 106 pounds, Christian Kodele at 113, and Dakota Wickel at 220 pounds.

Two of the Falcons will meet Box Elder wrestlers next. Kodele will square off against Box Elder's Shand Hardy at 106; Box Elder's Joe Flores take on Wickel in the 220 semifinals, while Logan and Mountain Crest wrestlers square off in the other semifinal.

Box Elder also will send Jake Smith into the semifinals at 120 pounds, followed by Dante Winward at 138, Jake Tolman at 145, Rasten Yeates at 152, Nick Sorenson at 160, Britton Gunter at 170, Breckin Gunter at 195, and Rylee Reeves at 285.

Roy's Tyson Stander is through to the semis where he will meet the Bees' Tolman for the right to advance to the 6:10 p.m. finals.

In all, Logan sent six wrestlers on to the semifinals, while Mountain Crest qualified four grapplers and Bountiful had three. Sky View also had a single semifinalist.

In the 5-A championship bracket, Pleasant Grove sits at 121.5 points, followed by Viewmon (110), Alta (89, and Fremont (70), with Weber and Layton sixth and seventh. Syracuse is ninth overall.

Fremont has four wrestlers still alive for state titles after two rounds of wrestling. Syracuse, Weber and Layton have a pair of wrestlers into the semifinals, while Davis and Northridge each had a single wrestler advance past the quarterfinals.

The Silver Wolves will send Jaydon Rogers and York Ash to the semifinals at 106 and 113, respectively, while A.J. Arteaga advanced at 126 and Brandon Barela advanced at 145.

Barela will meet Northridge's Ryan Goodwin for the right to advance.

Syracuse's Zane Rich won a pair of matches at 132, while teammate Jake Garver advanced at 120.

Weber's Mack Huntsman is undefeated at 160, while teammate Devon Childress won a pair as well at 170.

Layton's Carlos Turner takes his 45-0 record into the 285-pound semifinals, while Ken Astle is through to the 138-pound semis as well.

Davis' Nick Casey is alive at 182 pounds.

Viewmont sent eight wrestlers into today's semifinals.

The championship semifinals begin at noon, with the finals in the evening.

The state 3-A, 2-A and 1-A championships begin on Friday at 1 p.m., with the finals on Saturday evening.
