LAYTON -- The Layton Lancers won the their second Region 1 boys basketball game in a row on Thursday, topping Syracuse 60-54 in a hard-fought battle on their home court.
The Lancers sprinted out to a 19-7 edge after one quarter, but the Titans battled back to within 31-24 at the break.
The teams battled tooth-and-nail all the way home, but the Lancers held off the visiting team.
Layton didn't help its cause with a 9-for-18 effort at the foul line.
Kade Petersen scored 19 points to lead the Lancers (8-12 overall, 2-7 league, while Mike Hibbert added 16 and J.T. Anderson checked in with 10 points.
Brock Anderson topped the Titans (6-14, 1-8) with 21 points, while Logan Chapman added nine points.
The game was moved up a day because Davis schools aren't in session today. The rest of Region 1 will go to battle tonight.
* BOUNTIFUL 56, WOODS CROSS 45: At Bountiful, the Woods Cross Wildcats, battling for their playoff lives, pushed league-leading Bountiful to the limit but the Braves won on their home court.
Down 28-20 at halftime, the Wildcats worked back into the contest with a 14-6 edge in the third period. But the Braves regained their edge in the fourth, and went 23-of-29 at the foul line.
Sam Merrill led a balanced scoring attack for Bountiful (17-2, 9-0 league) with 15 points. Dain Murdock added 11, and Brandon Yates and Brit Harding checked in with nine each.
Hayden Grant scored 19 points, while Mike Jacobson added 12 for Woods Cross (14-6 overall, 5-4 league).
