SALT LAKE CITY -- A panel of Utah senators will consider a bill seeking to repeal the controversial program that will allow illegal immigrants to live and work in the state.
The Senate Workforce Services Committee is scheduled to take public comment and possibly vote on Senate Bill 157 on Thursday.
Republican Sen. Steve Urquhart of St. George, the sponsor of SB 157, says the guest worker program rewards people who break the law.
The program was signed into law in March by Gov. Gary Herbert. It doesn't take effect until 2013 and requires the state to seek a federal waiver, which has not been granted.
The program would permit illegal immigrants who haven't committed other crimes and have steady employment to remain in the state with their immediate families.
