USU holds conference on 'electric' roads

PARK CITY -- Engineers, government officials and scientists are gathering in Park City for an international conference on a futuristic system of electric roads that could power vehicles wirelessly.

Utah State University's Energy Dynamics Laboratory -- a leading researcher in electric road systems -- will sponsor the conference Thursday and Friday at Newpark Resort & Hotel at Kimball Junction.

The conference follows the award of a $2.7 million federal grant to establish an electrified bus route on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City.

The shuttle bus will draw a wireless boost from charging pads embedded in concrete. Experts say this concept could revolutionize road travel and replace gas-guzzling vehicles.

Among conference-goers are U.S. federal officials and scientists from New Zealand, South Korea and Europe.
