OREM -- When 11 Bear River wrestlers claimed opening-round victories on Friday in the state 3-A wrestling championships, hopes soared for the Bears faithful for a surprise showing at the tournament.

But only three of the Bears advance through the evening quarterfinals at Utah Valley University's UCCU Center.

After two rounds of action, Delta (115 points) leads Payson (86.5), Uintah (84), Wasatch (75.5) and Bear River (75) in the team standings. The Rabbits are in a good spot in their quest for a fourth straight state title.

Bears Dominic Kinder (120), Dalyn Bergman (160) and Keanyn Zundel (220) face tough semifinals today with a shot at tonight's state championship matches.

After a pair of high-point wins Friday, Kinder will meet Branson Ashworth of Spanish Fork in today's 120-pound semifinal.

Zundel posted a pair of quick pins, and will now face Curtis Bullock of Snow Canyon in the semfinals. Bergman won a couple of hard-fought openers, including an overtime victory in the quarterfinals, and will now face Snow Canyon's Kevan Webb in the semis.

First-round winners who dropped into the consolation bracket for the Region 1 champion Bears were Nickolas Bingham (106), Brady Haramoto (113), Tanner VanValkenberg (126), Braxton Conger (145), Alex Creer and Tanner Christensen (152), as well as Max Burnside and BroDee Stevenson (285).

Morgan's Kade Carrigan earned a pair of victories at 145 pounds, and will face Juab's Dalton Harmon in today's semifinals.

In the 2-A tournament, Millard leads North Sevier in the team chase. In the 1-A tourney, Panguitch has built a lead over Monticello and Altamont in the team chase.

Consolation action resumes at 10 a.m. today, with the finals set for 5 p.m.
