Tigers fall to Payson Lions in 3-A opener

PAYSON --

There is more to Tanner Newbold's game then his spot-up 3-point shooting.

There are the rebounds, the steals and the assists.

But it's just so hard to focus on the other things when Newbold is knocking down 3-pointers.

Saturday night in Payson, Newbold scored 10 of his 22 points in the pivotal third quarter to help Payson extend its winning streak to 11 straight games with a 71-56 win over Ogden in the first round of the state 3A tournament.

Payson outscored Ogden 20 to 10 in the third quarter to take charge of the game.

Lyden Egbert was sensational for the Tigers. His 32 points kept them in the game, but even he couldn't stop Payson from pulling away in the third quarter.

The win ended Ogden's season at 10-11.

* DELTA 49, BEAR RIVER 39: At Delta, a tough opening half hurt the Bears, who still battle right to the end.

Down 23-15 at the break, the Bears whittled the lead to three after three quarters.

Tory Brown scored 18; Wade Miller added 11 for the Bears, who finished the season with a 7-15 mark.
