Girls basketball: Lancers run amok in opening round

TAYLORSVILLE -- Region 1 powers Layton and Syracuse continued on their collision course in the state 5-A girls basketball tournament with convincing victories on Tuesday at Salt Lake Community College.

Layton posted an efficient dismantling of West Jordan by a 66-42 score Tuesday evening, adding to its lead in each quarter.

The Lancers will now meet Region 1 champion Riverton on Thursday in the quarterfinals. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at SLCC's Lifetime Activities Center.

Syracuse topped Copper Hills 84-35 in the upper bracket.

Coach Van Price got productive efforts from his entire roster, led by Courtney Wood, who roughed up the Jaguars for 28 points.

I thought we played good defense today, and did a really good job in the post," Layton coach Van Price said. "We had a little bit of foul trouble and the girls that came in did a good job."

The Lancers' tenacious defense produced a 17-9 lead after the first quarter, and a 31-15 edge at halftime.

Madi Smith chipped in with 14 points for Layton -- now a glossy 19-2 on the season -- while Livia Treseder added 14.

"Courtney had a nice scoring game. We were patient and worked the ball around and she was able to get free a lot," Price said. "Amber Daly did a good job of mixing the plays as well."

Annie Oliver paced the Jaguars with a dozen points.

Price said the Lancers want more.

"They're playing hard and lots of kids got a taste of tournament play," he said.

The quarterfinal-round matchup with Riverton pits the top two defenses in the 5-A ranks.

* SYRACUSE 84, COPPER HILLS: At Taylorsville, the Copper Hills squad had no answer for the Titans' speed and size. Syracuse led 47-14 at halftime and coasted into the quarterfinals, where it will meet Lone Peak, a winner over Kearns, in Thursday's 7:15 p.m. quarterfinal.

Makenlee Williams drilled five 3-pointers en route to a 27-point night. Jayda Bovero added 15 points, Brittney Martin scored 14 and six others found the scoring column for the 19-0 Titans.

Savannah Sandberg led the Grizzlies with 13 points.

* ALTA 67, DAVIS 55: At Taylorsville, the Darts put a solid scare into Region 3 champion Alta but could never quite catch up.

Davis fell behind by eight early on but cut the margin to 29-25 at halftime. The Hawks proved equal to the task and maintained their lead in the second half.

The Darts, who were led by Jessica Richardon with 17 points, didn't help their cause with a 5-for-12 effort at the foul line.

Courtney Hurts and Katelyn Mager added a dozen points each for the Darts, who saw their season end at 12-11.

Chloe Ferre finished with 24 and teammate Makenzi Morrison contributed 23 for the Hawks.

* WEBER VS. BRIGHTON, LATE: At Taylorsville, the Warriors battled the Bengals late Tuesday night. See the result in Thursday's sports section.
