Matheson says comprehensive energy policy needed

SALT LAKE CITY -- U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson is calling on federal regulators to streamline the application process for oil and gas projects and eliminate confusing rules that impede energy development.

Matheson says during a speech to Utah lawmakers Tuesday he is sponsoring a bill requiring the Environmental Protection Agency to review its regulations.

Matheson says conventional and alternative energy development needs to be encouraged by the nation's energy policy.

Matheson, the only Democratic member of Utah's congressional delegation, says he supports building the Keystone XL pipeline that would bring oil from Canada to Texas. The congressman also supports expanding domestic natural gas development and oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

Matheson is speaking separately to the Utah House and Senate and is also taking questions from legislators.
