Utah County lawmaker targets Internet gambling

SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah County lawmaker’s efforts to make Internet gambling illegal passed the House on Tuesday.

The House voted 61-9 to approve House Bill 108, which would add gambling on the Internet or any handheld device to the definition of illegal gambling. The bill will now go to the Senate for further consideration.

Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, said legislation in Congress would legalize gaming across the United States and that his bill would keep gambling illegal in Utah.

He said the bill’s impact goes beyond the Internet. Once a state allows any form of gaming, Sandstrom said, it then cannot stop the building of casinos on Indian reservations.
