Kaysville shirked responsibility, looked to Big Brother

Editor,

There has been much written lately concerning the Davis County cities that are seeking Federal Emergency Management Agency funds from the Federal Government (Feb. 9, "FEMA briefing set for Davis relief"). Kaysville is seeking $500,000 in relief from FEMA for the damages from the recent winds. In Tuesday night's Kaysville City Council meeting, Mayor Steve Hiatt, with support from Councilman Gil Miller, said that it would be fiscally irresponsible not to accept this "insurance policy" that we pay into and that the funds are there for us (Feb. 15, "FEMA explains relief process").

The truth is that a great portion of these funds are going to address a failed electrical infrastructure that should have been able to withstand the winds that hit us. Instead of pouring our excess electrical funds each year into re-building the aging Kaysville electrical infrastructure, the city council has chosen to spend our electrical funds on real estate "investments" that have nothing to do with electricity. Most don't realize that just one year's payment towards these real estate investments could have easily paid for the damage done by the winds.

Instead of our being self-sufficient, as a great many of us believe we should be, we are now sticking our hands out, like so many on the government dole.

The truth is Kaysville city, doesn't pay for this "insurance policy,' we, the citizens of the United States do. While some may feel that we are due our fair share, I think we have instead ignored our own responsibilities and, like so many others, looked to Big Brother to solve our problems for us.
