Skier dies in avalanche on Park City ridge

PARK CITY — Authorities say a 24-year-old Salt Lake City man is dead after being buried for an hour by an avalanche just outside the Canyons Resort.

The Summit County Sheriff’s office says Timothy Robert Baker was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but died a short while later.

Det. Ronald Bridge says Baker was dug out of the snow by ski patrollers shortly before 4 p.m. MDT.

Canyons Resort spokesman Steve Pastorino says the out-of-bounds avalanche happened in the Dutch Draw area.

Craig Gordon of the Utah Avalanche Center says Dutch Draw is a popular backcountry bowl.

The bowl is a short climb from the ski area’s highest chairlift.

Gordon says high overnight winds could have made avalanche conditions worse.
