Some Utah taxpayers still owed '08 refunds by IRS

OGDEN — About 7,800 Utah taxpayers who did not file their federal income tax return for 2008 have $6,676,000 in potential refunds waiting for them.

The Internal Revenue Service just needs them to file their 2008 tax returns. The median potential refund is $536.

The return must be filed no later than April 17 to collect the money.

When someone fails to file a return, the law allows most taxpayers a three-year window for claiming their refund. If the return is not filed within three years, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.

The IRS reminds taxpayers who want a 2008 refund that the government may hold their checks if they have not filed returns for 2009 and 2010.
