PROVO -- Brandon Davies scored 25 points and Brock Zylstra had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead BYU to a 76-66 victory against Portland on Saturday at the Marriott Center.
Charles Abouo added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Cougars (24-7, 12-4 West Coast), who played without leading scorer Noah Hartsock (knee).
BYU clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's WCC tournament and receives a bye to the quarterfinals.
"I'm really happy for our players and their effort tonight," coach Dave Rose said. "We had guys step up and play well. It was a hard fought, competitive game and I'm glad we got the win. Now we'll look forward to the tournament."
Ryan Nicholas had 19 points and 14 rebounds and Tanner Riley 16 points for the Pilots (6-23, 3-13), who will be the eighth seed. Portland plays No. 9 seed Santa Clara in Wednesday's opening-round contest.
The Cougars scored the game's first eight points and never trailed. The Pilots got within 67-61 with 3:53 remaining but went scoreless for almost two minutes as Abouo hit two free throws and had a three-point play to spark a 9-0 run.
BYU had a decided edge in free throws, making 21 of 31 (67.7 percent). Portland had just nine attempts from the line, making five.
"With it being senior night, its really hard knowing that one of your two seniors is not going to play," Rose said. "My heart will always break for Noah because he gives us a lot and I know he did not go out the way he wanted to."
The win locks up a third-place conference finish for the Cougars in their inaugural season in the West Coast Conference.
The Cougars will continue their season at the WCC tournament in Las Vegas, which begins Feb. 29. The WCC tournament games will be broadcast on BYUtv, ESPNU, ESPN2 and ESPN. As the No. 3 seed, BYU has a bye to the quarterfinals where it will play the winner of No. 6 seed San Diego vs. No. 7 seed Pepperdine.
