WEST VALLEY CITY -- A spirited Bonneville High effort fell short in the opening round of the state 4-A boys basketball tournament Monday at the Maverik Center.
The Lakers played toe-to-toe with Region 7 champion Olympus for three of the four quarters, but a 19-8 edge for the Titans in the third period proved too much to overcome for Jason Finder's squad. The Titans won 51-37 and will advance to Wednesday's quarterfinals.
The Lakers' season ends with a 11-12 record.
Olympus will meet East, a 66-56 winner over Springville.
In early games, Provo held off Highland 42-39 and Region 5 champion Mountain Crest topped Hillcrest 44-37. The Bulldogs and Mustangs meet on Wednesday.
In the lower bracket, Sky View, a dark horse in the 4-A tournament, dropped a tough back-and-forth game with Skyline, 38-31, to be eliminated on the opening day.
Woods Cross, Bountiful and Logan also get their opening round games in. The state 5-A tourmament begins on Tuesday morning.
