I find it disturbing, and even insulting, the way politicians use the name of God to endear themselves to the voters. Rick Santorum promises to govern "according to the will of God." George Bush repeatedly claimed that he was "doing God's work." Orrin Hatch is running for office (again) because God would be disappointed if he didn't. Presumably, God would be more disappointed in all of us if we don't vote for him. Of course this is pandering and election year gibberish.
But on a deeper level, is it not also blasphemy? Is this not disrespect to the very God they claim to heed? These men have no political substance so they distract the population with appeals to a higher authority. What does this say about their true moral character? What does this say about us if we do not call them on it?
