House Bill 87 to benefit billboard companies

SALT LAKE CITY — Billboard companies may be able to upgrade signs to electronic versions without getting a city’s approval.

House Bill 87, sponsored by Rep. Mel Brown, R-Coalville, was approved by the House, 55-16, with four absent, on Tuesday. It now goes to the Senate for further consideration.

If a city or county does not want a billboard in its area, it must file eminent domain proceedings in court, according to the bill. If the judge rules in favor of the company, the government agency must pay all legal fees.
