State 5-A boys basketball tournament updates

WEST VALLEY CITY  -- Region 1 champion Northridge got off to a winning start on Tuesday at the state 5-A boys basketball tournament at the Maverik Center.

But it was a close call.

The Knights topped Copper Hills 43-41 in overtime in Tuesday's first-round game. Karson Casteel scored 11 points; Jesse Armistead added 10 points.

Northridge will now take on Lone Peak, a 62-36 winner over Kearns in the early game.

The rest of the Top of Utah was shut out.

Fremont fell behind by a 68-38 margin against West Jordan. After the Jaguars blistered the nets to open up a huge halftime lead, the Sillver Wolves showed a lot of heart in the second half but were unable to advance. Brock Smith led the way with 16 points, while Hayden Spencer added 10.

Weber suffered a similar fate as its cross-county rival. The Warriors managed just 14 first-half points and fell to Brighton 62-45.  The Bengals led 30-14 at the half.

Region 2 champion Viewmont fiddled with late leads in regulation and overtime, but fell to Riverton 52-51 in 2OTs as Region 4 won four of its opening-round games.

Davis and Alta played late in the evening bracket finale, and although the Darts scrambled to the final buzzer, the Hawks won 58-46 to end Davis' season.
