RICHFIELD -- Layton Christian Academy broke open a tight battle Wednesday in the firstround of the state 1-A boys basketball playoffs.
Region 17 champion LCA led Panguitch 30-28 at halftime in action at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. But the Eagles used a stifling scoring spurt to open the second half and rolled to a 74-57 victory.
Layton Christian will now play Tabiona a 44-38 upset winner over Tintic.
In early action, Green River topped Valley 37-35, while Region 21 runner-up Rich topped Piute 59-47.
St. Joseph plays Monticello in an evening game. The state 1-A quarterfinal-round continues Thursday in both championship and consolation-bracket action.
Region 6 champion Bountiful advanced with a solid quarterfinal win Wednesdayin the state 4-A boys basketball quarterfinals at Maverik Center. The Braves defeated Herriman 57-49 in the early game.
Region 5 champ Mountain Crest takes on Provo in the 7:15 p.m. nightcap.
