SALT LAKE CITY — A resolution to put a constitutional amendment before voters this fall regarding use of severance tax funds has cleared another key hurdle.
The Senate voted 27-1 on Monday to approve House Joint Resolution 6, which would ask voters to approve that a specific percentage of tax revenue generated from natural resources be put into a permanent state trust fund.
The fund is currently in place and contains $100 million, said the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jim Nielson, R-Bountiful.
By comparison, severance funds in Wyoming and Texas contain billions.
Utah lawmakers have used some of the severance tax revenue for other purposes over the years, Nielson said.
