Memorial sign bill moves to governor’s desk

SALT LAKE CITY — Two years after the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 14 large crosses on state highways were unconstitutional, new memorial signs for Utah Highway Patrol troopers killed in the line of duty moved one step closer to reality.

The Senate unanimously approved a bill Wednesday allowing new memorials for the 14 UHP troopers killed in the line of duty to be put up by the Utah Department of Transportation.

As part of the proposal, the name of one fallen officer will be included in signage encouraging people to use their seat belts and to drive safely. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville.
