Dual immersion programs funded

SALT LAKE CITY — The House and the Senate have approved funding for the dual immersion language program in schools.

Sen. Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, and Rep. Brad Dee, R-Washington Terrace, said on Wednesday lawmakers approved the funding late Tuesday night.

Without the funding, a number of school districts would not have been able to start new programs this fall in elementary and junior high schools.

The state had received federal grants for new dual immersion language programs in the past, but this year the federal government discontinued the grants, lawmakers said.

Rep. Brad Dee, R-Washington Terrace, said he received numerous emails from constituents requesting the funding.
