Search on for man who fired at eastern Utah deputy

VERNAL -- Utah and Colorado authorities are searching for a man who fired shots at a Uintah County sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop.

Uintah County officials say the stop happened about 9 p.m. Thursday on Old Red Wash Road, about 10 miles south of Vernal. A deputy reported he smelled alcohol, and asked the man to exit his vehicle.

Instead, the man drove his white SUV away.

Authorities say the deputy followed the man until the driver pulled a rifle and fired multiple shots at the deputy.

Officials tell KSL the deputy was probably saved because he ducked. Bullets shattered the vehicle's rear window and lodged in the driver's seat headrest.

Crews are searching for 66-year-old Dallas Rowley of Vernal. He was last driving a 1999 Chevy Suburban with Utah plates.
