SALT LAKE CITY -- Gov. Gary Herbert is receiving thousands of emails calling for the veto of bills passed by lawmakers during the Legislature's final days.
Spokeswoman Ally Isom says the governor's office has received about 800 emails urging a veto of an abstinence-only sex education bill. If signed, Utah teachers would not be allowed to discuss contraception, birth control or homosexuality.
Isom says more than 3,000 emails have come in from opponents of a bill prohibiting filming on farms, dairies and ranches. Many are form letters sent as part of an organized campaign by animal rights groups.
Utah PTA President-elect Liz Zentner says members are being encouraged to contact the governor and speak against the abstinence-only bill.
Zentner says the state currently encourages abstinence but students learn about contraception and its risks.
