OGDEN -- A loose horse from Harrisville caused a traffic accident in Ogden just after 10 p.m. Sunday.
An 8-year-old paint mare, due to foal next month, suffered fatal injuries and was put down soon after the accident.
Ogden Police Lt. Troy Burnett said the driver of the truck that hit the horse called police and reported the accident, which occurred in the northbound lanes at 560 N. Washington Blvd.
"A horse doesn't have a right of way running loose," Burnett said.
Neighbors of the animal's owner said the horse, which had been loose with three other horses, made its way to a gate on their property at 743 Washington Blvd. even though it already had a bad foot before the accident, was losing a lot of blood and had just suffered a badly broken leg.
Harrisville Police Chief Max Jackson said he shot the horse to put it out of its misery, but he said he believed it would have bled out and died soon anyway.
He said the incident was just one of those cases where police from both agencies had to work together because the accident happened in Ogden and the horse ended up back in Harrisville.
No citations were issued in the incident.
