LAYTON — Big Lots will soon fill the vacancy left when the Reams grocery store closed in August.
Big Lots, currently near the Layton Hills Mall at 495 W. 1425 North, will move into a 47,000-square-foot building at 1040 N. Main St., next to the Reams Western Wear store.
Officials said having a new tenant in the building will help revitalize the area.
Kara Hills, print advertising supervisor at Big Lots, said the grand-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be April 27.
The move has been in the works since the departure of the grocery store, but the building needed some remodeling and a more suitable design for Big Lots.
Ben Hart, Layton’s economic development specialist, expects to see businesses continue to move as they look for more rent-friendly spaces.
“This is definitely indicative of a much larger movement in the retail world of lease negotiation and finding the best place for your business,” he said.
Such movement has been a popular decision in the city the past few years.
Several Layton businesses, such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Aaron’s Furniture, Deseret Book and PetSmart, have found new homes without changing their ZIP code.
“It’s nice to see these businesses stay within the city,” Hart said.
While the move by Big Lots to the Reams development is beneficial for the city because the business will fill a vacant building, the move also creates a new vacancy near the mall.
Hart said city officials have already started working with CBL & Associates Properties, which owns the mall, to help bring in a new business to fill the soon-to-be vacant space.
“We want to make sure the reposition of that back building is effective and contributes to overall synergy of the mall,” he said.
Big Lots operates more than 1,400 retail stores in 48 states.
