DRAPER -- Utah National Guard officials warn residents to beware of scammers trying to pose as soldiers and preying on their victims' patriotism.

National Guard officials say they've seen a surge of Internet-based scams that use a service member's photo or information to rip people off.

Some ads claim a service member needs to sell a vehicle fast because they're about to deploy. Other scammers create fake profiles on online dating sites, then end up asking victims for money.

Utah National Guard spokesman Maj. Bruce Roberts says people inherently trust the military, and some people have been abusing that trust to promote fraudulent activities.
