Governor's mansion turns blue for Down syndrome

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's first lady is joining other first spouses in turning her house blue to raise awareness of Down syndrome.

Jeanette Herbert plans to point blue floodlights on the sides of the governor's mansion Wednesday as part of the 2012 Light the Way campaign.

An average of 73 children are born with Down syndrome each year in Utah. Herbert says she recognizes that research is vital to improve the lives of the many Utahns with the chromosomal disorder.

The campaign is co-sponsored by New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie and the nonprofit organization Research Down Syndrome.
