While on the phone, the caller informed dispatchers that a car had sped from the neighbor's trailer home and that a man appeared to be angry and banged something against the home. Atkin said the neighbor also told dispatchers that the front door of the trailer home appeared to have been kicked in.
Officers arrived at the trailer home at 9:47 p.m., and at 9:54 p.m. received information that the woman who lives in the trailer was at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to her leg and that the couple's two young children were still in the trailer.
Police suspect the man shot the woman.
Five officers were on scene. A man came out of the trailer home and appeared to be complying with officers, but suddenly started going back inside, Atkin said. Officers tried twice to Tase the man. One Taser missed, and the other seemed ineffectual, he said.
To prevent any harm to the children and the man's access to the gun, an officer fired several rounds at the man, Atkin said. The man was taken to a local hospital, breathing but unconscious. Police reported at 9:58 p.m. that the man had been shot.
The two children who were in the home are safe and are staying with other adults.
The woman has since been released from the hospital and was taken to the Layton police station. The officers involved in the shooting returned to the police station to notify their families that they are fine.
The police investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Atkin said police had been out to this residence twice in the past year for domestic disturbances. He didn't immediately know if the man or the woman had any criminal history.
A neighbor who said he had seen the couple out in the area said they are in their late 20s or early 30s.
