SALT LAKE CITY -- Westminster College in Salt Lake City has named the chancellor of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as the school's 17th president.

School officials announced Tuesday that Brian Levin-Stankevich will take over when Michael Bassis retires in mid-July.

Levin-Stankevich has served as the Wisconsin chancellor since 2006. He worked as interim president of Eastern Washington University before that. He has a bachelor's degree in history from Hamilton College in New York and a Ph.D. from the State University of New York.

Westminster officials praised Levin-Stankevich's record and say he's committed to building on the college's reputation.

The selection ends the liberal arts college's seven-month presidential search, which drew 60 applicants.

Bassis is retiring after 10 years at the helm.
