FARMINGTON — Andrew Tolman, 16, of Farmington, died Tuesday evening after he was hit by a vehicle while trying to walk through a crosswalk, said Farmington Police Chief Wayne Hansen.
Tolman was walking his bicycle southbound through a crosswalk at State Street near 400 West in Farmington when he was hit by a westbound sport utility vehicle, Hansen said.
Davis County dispatchers were called at about 6:06 p.m.
The teen was flown to University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City with severe head trauma, but he died on the way there, Hansen said.
The teen’s parents were notified Tuesday, but police waited until Wednesday to release his name, pending notification of his extended family.
The boy was not wearing a bicycle helmet when he was hit, he added.
The driver of the SUV, a woman Hansen estimated to be in her 20s, was not injured.
Hansen said on Wednesday the woman was still “extremely distraught.”
Investigators did not know how fast the driver was traveling at the time of the collision, but the speed limit for vehicles on the road is 35 mph, Hansen said.
Police temporarily shut down traffic near the scene.
Hansen said Wednesday that when the investigation is completed, it will be turned over to be reviewed by the Davis County Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
